California toxics in packaging
Product Stewardship
"This law affects every manufacturer, distributor, and reseller regardless of where the package was manufactured; therefore, it is extremely important to comply with this regulation when applicable to your facility."
On 1 January 2006, California imposed the Toxics in Packaging Prevention Act that limits the quantity of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium in product packaging. Since packaging comprises approximately one-third of domestic waste, the goal of this legislation will curb the amount of heavy metals entering municipal and solid waste streams, which will consequentially reduce the amount of waste in landfills and incinerators. This law affects every manufacturer, distributor, and reseller regardless of where the package was manufactured; therefore, it is extremely important to comply with this regulation when applicable to your facility. JECSI will assess the materials manufactured, distributed, or sold by your facility to determine if this regulation pertains to products at your facility and will aid in the preparation of the proper certification and supporting documentation to ensure compliance.
